17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
The thought concerning temptation and evil which began in verse 13 is concluded in verse 18. James reveals that God is good, and He is unable to do anything evil! John tells us that God is love – it is at the very core of who He is (1 John 4:8). Love is fundamental to God’s makeup… love is one of the key attributes of God while another is holiness (1 Peter 1:16). Essentially, God is loving and holy with all of His other attributes complimenting these two. When Jesus became a man, He relinquished some of His prerogatives and privileges (cf. Phil. 2:5-8); but He did not cease to be loving and holy nor did He lose any of His attributes of deity. Because of His unchangeable nature, it was impossible for Jesus to be anything but gracious and righteous – loving and holy.
The Psalmist said to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” (Ps. 29:2) James concludes his discussion on evil by showing us that we have a beautiful Father who loves and gives. What a stark contrast to the image of evil, sin and death presented in verses 13-15! Sin hates and takes. God is light and life! God is good, and He never can nor will change! He is the same yesterday, today and forever! (Heb. 13:8) Everything He does is with purpose and is perfect or complete. The gift of His Son wa the ultimate gift of perfection – for in Him dwells the fullness of God! (Col. 1:19 ) His gift of everlasting life, which He willingly and freely gave to us, is good and perfect.
My first post on this passage was actually “out of place” it was supposed to be around the third post… (sorry about that). I hope you do take the time to read this wonderful commentary on James 1:17-18 written by Scott Crawford.
Today is Veteran’s Day… a forgotten Holiday if you ask me. I have been working a part-time job at Target the last couple of weeks and this morning I was so reminded of what “forgotten Holidays” are. Already, everything… I mean EVERYTHING is about Christmas. Now mind you, I love Christmas, it is my favorite time of year. But what about Veteran’s Day… and Thanksgiving for Pete’s Sake?? It won’t be long and everyone will be going crazy on “Black Friday” and searching for that perfect toy or present… but let’s not get ahead of ourselves ok… today is Veteran’s Day. We would not enjoy anything that we enjoy were it not for the men and women that have risked their lives for our Country. So today, we salute you serviceperson! To my little brother James and his beautiful wife Melissa… who both have already served in Iraq…
You guys are my heroes…
til next time,
